About this piece…
The emphasis in this painting for me was to create a bold depiction of the choppy rhythm of the movement of the sea as the central theme, which laps strongly against the shores of the buildings.
This movement of the water contrasts dramatically with the starkness of the block shapes of the vertical buildings three quarters of the way into the painting, as one’s eye travels into the scene.
A play on pattern is emphasised not just through the repeated shapes of the waves yet also through the repeated shapes of the rectangle and square shapes of the buildings, together with the railings repeated linear effect also seen horizontally in the winding stairs.
Soft orange peach tones are used to further complement, contrast and to express the setting sunlight of the day. With a wonderful effect of silhouetted shapes of the buildings on the sky line.
