About this piece…
Balance is beautifully expressed in this painting. The little harbour house in the farthest distance to the right of the painting, balances perfectly compositionally with the front boat to the left of the painting. The sky creates a wonderful upward v shape, which contrasts with the curved shape of the water beneath. Furthermore the central curved area of land creates an interesting horizontal across the canvas, dipping outwards towards the left bottom corner of the canvas, and upward towards the top right of the painting.
Strong lemon greens are used in the foreground, with other varying tones of blue green for the trees behind. Furthermore soft blue greys with subtle greys are used to suggest the farthest mountains in the distance, together with textured fast moving brush marks in varying muted tones.
