About this piece…
The varying shades of green dominate the colouring of the composition as a whole. Using fresh lemon greens in the leaves and foliage in the distance, together with strong mint greens and blue greens, ones eye moves around the painting. This movement is further expressed by the wonderful pattern of the front branches which frame the painting, and create a dynamic stained glass effect of negative and positive effect of shapes. The boat is more subtly expressed using predominantly white and of whites for the mast of the boat. Only the bottom area is painted in a stronger blue grey suggestive of weight, and movement in the water. The waves in the water create a further strong effect, using blue greens to suggest turbulent motion, and blue whites to suggest waves.
