About this piece…
This painting has an earthy textured feel, using warm tones of predominantly browns and pinks. The central feature of the pot plant, has been painted in thick impasto paint in swirly round shapes of lemon yellows, muddy olive greens, and dark black browns. The brick work is suggested in strong fast linear movements of more muted shades of ochres, pinks and off whites, with hints of dark brown black fast moving linear dashes.
The only flat calm areas of paint are the three square shapes of the central window behind the pot plant. This brings a dynamic contrast to the whole, and further dynamic expression as these flat simple areas silhouette the flowers, creating wonderful negative shapes, and too emphasises the boldness of the flowers central to the painting.
