This painting has great expression in pattern, with repetative block shapes and vertical shapes of shutters and windows. Repetitive flat shapes of blue greens, warm orchids, peach pinks, olive greens, yellow creams, and dark browns create a light fun painting, which is contrasted with the three dimensional textured effect of the boat in the front. To add to this contrast, the little flags blow in the wind across the painting creating a sense of movement.
The strong choice of frames help enhance the feel of pattern and flatness. The inner white frame moves ones eye inward to the painting, while the outer frame encloses the whole as if looking at the scene through a window outwards, yet too picks up the overall theme of the flat pattern of the painting.
