This strong bold dynamic effect of rippling moving water, being the dominant theme of this painting is expressed using strong painterly brush marks of dashes of paint in an Impressionist technique. The wonderful vertical line of the light reflection in the water, blends harmoniously into the tints of varying colouring to the right and moving into the darker variations of colour at the right edge of the painting, thus showing a strong expression of light source. This is further picked up by the sharp white light across the water from the right wall above, creating a strong horizontal dynamic line. The patterned arched bridge in the farthest distance enhances the wonderful depth of the composition expressed. The rich fresh colours of the boats give a further interesting effect to the composition as a whole. Pattern is further expressed by the wooden poles which lean to the right along the wall. Finally the painterly dabs and dashes of deep green at the top left side of the painting soften the painting, and balance the dark painted area of the shadowed effect of the water to the bottom right of the painting.
The shape of the canvas I chose helps strengthen the composition, being a large long rectangular shape, which is further emphasised by the long vertical lines of the two arches painted on the right of the painting along the brick wall.
